2025 Moravian University Mural "Lost In The Reverie"

Picture
Design Mock-Up, 2025
Located at the Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus, this project was directed and designed by Elliot DeCaro–leading student teams to deliver an original, socially conscientious mural for the campus community. This collaborative endeavor features numerous symbolic elements uniting harmoniously to provoke feelings of tranquility and whimsy among spectators. The title embodies this intentionality, inviting visitors to engage with “reverie” or fanciful daydreams meant to create a restful escape from the monotonous everyday.
The Moravian settlers, well known for their advanced medical knowledge, heavily influenced the decision to feature vegetation, particularly St. John’s Worts, Purple Coneflower, Dill, and Betony due to their medicinal uses and connections to these settlers—bolstering the mural’s themes connecting to self-care and mental health. Of particular note is the maple tree branch and leaves that reference a red maple planted at the entrance to the parking lot behind Colonial Hall. This tree honors the namesake of south campus, Priscilla Payne Hurd, a generous benefactor dedicated to the creation of the art and music departments as well as Payne Gallery.
