Artist Statement

My work explores the intricate realm of identity within the human experience through abstraction of our physical forms. Poking, prodding, and contorting our fleshy exteriors while toying with the intimacy of personal identity interlaced with the complexity of our modern society. Through dissecting the roles of our anatomy, I seek to understand what parts make us whole, what makes us human.

I believe in embracing a variety of media to authentically convey the complexities of identity and self. While most of my work utilizes paint on canvas, I also welcome the opportunity to explore other mediums such as organic matter, scavenged objects, and scrap metal. These materials play a significant role in influencing my work and, at times, become integrated into it.

My process starts by interrogating modern society and examining how we express our humanity while bound to it. Often I find myself aimlessly wading through town at dusk when the world becomes nothing more than shapes illuminated by fragments of light. These are moments where the mind can freely wander and take note of each prodding curiosity that takes root. During these escapades I find myself toying with flesh and form, fascinated by our transfixion to the physical body. This rigid idolization is present throughout all our societal expectations and is where my desire to confront them originates. Bodies are fluid and complex, designed by nature to be individual.

The human experience is a fascinating ordeal concerning the mortal body caught within identity, society, and self expression. Although our identities help us discover ourselves, they can serve as barriers that divide between us too. Nevertheless, exercising autonomy over our identities is how we discover ourselves and how we as people craft the narratives of our lives.
